Poster Design Unit Part 1

Most artists have at some point or will at some point be asked to create a design for a friend.  This is an introductory unit that will give the students the tools to complete this task for others or if they wish to create personal posters for themselves.

Objectives:
Students gain an understanding of Adobe Illustrator through the creation of poster designs.
Students learn basic poster design including visual interest, font choice, image choice

Structure
Power Point

Students will be introduced to the concept of the posters
  • Students will have a discussion on:
    • the art style
    • Image Choice
    • Patterns and Color Choices
    • Subject Choice
  • Students will create a poster using a movie that has already been made,
  • Break class into groups, have each group assigned a movie, each group member chooses a character from their movie and designs the poster for them
      • They will collect images from the movie of their character
      • They will need to pick a slogan or line from the movie that they feel captures the message behind their character
        • Students will have a discussion in class in their groups where they present their slogan choice and must provide an explanation as to why they have chosen this slogan
  • Students will draw sketches digitally or manually using inspiration from chosen movie to create a mock-up of their poster design
    • students will include multiple placement options and have several font choices
    • Students will have a class discussion where they must present their choices to the class
  • Students will begin constructing their poster in Adobe Illustrator using their sketches, images, slogan and suggestions from classmates
  • Students will create a rough draft that they will share with classmates and explain their design choices
  • Students will edit poster based on class and teacher feedback
  • Students will finalize and print poster to be matted and displayed
